Information from Bloomberg details the limitations hampering Amazon’s efforts to get its delivery drone program off the floor, citing a high worker turnover rate and potential safety risks.
According to Bloomberg, there were five drone crashes throughout a 4-month length at the employer’s checking out a web page in Pendleton, Oregon. A crash can also occur after a drone lost its propeller, but Bloomberg says Amazon cleaned up the wreckage before the Federal Aviation management may want to look into it. Amazon spokesperson AV Zammit disputed this, announcing that Amazon accompanied orders it acquired from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to record the event and pass the drone.
The following month, a drone’s motor close off as it switched from an upward flight path to flying directly in advance. Two safety functions — one that’s supposed to land the drone in this kind of situation and another that stabilizes the drone — each failed. As a result, the drone flipped the other way up and dropped from 160 feet in the air, leading to a broom fire that stretched across 25 acres. “Instead of a controlled descent to a safe landing, [the drone] dropped about 160 ft in an out of control upright fall and became fed on by fire,” the FAA said in a document of the incident received via Bloomberg.

“Safety is our top priority,” Zammit stated. “We use a closed, private facility to check our systems up to their limits and past.
